Producers and casting directors select stars based on their salability. Obviously, they want to turn a huge profit. They also look for a set of celebrities who have great chemistry. As viewers, we love to see two stars who light the screen up, preferably in a good way. Here are some top notch kissers who have brought seriously good attraction to life.
Mr. & Mrs. Smith
In 2005 ‘Mr. & Mrs. Smith’ lit up the big screen. This was a dynamic action flick and a romantically charged film. The two stars, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie sizzled with their chemistry – with both loving and fight scenes. The two had some hot and emotional exchanges, and their chemistry was off the charts.
After production wrapped, it was rumored that Pitt and Julie were seen together quite often. Brad Pitt left Jennifer Aniston, thus giving us the ‘ship term “Brangelina.” The rest is history.
A Relationship Is Born?
In ‘A Star is Born,’ both Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga dominated the screen. Cooper’s tragic turn as a seasoned singer and Gaga’s portrayal of a young rising star captured the hearts - and ears - of moviegoers. Their chemistry was undeniable.
Rumors began to circulate that the two had a relationship off camera, but it was never confirmed. Both Cooper and Gaga denied any relationship and always maintained they were friends. Maybe there’s a chance in the future?
In the ‘Jurassic World’ franchise there was no denying the attraction between the two main characters, Owen (Chris Pratt) and Claire (Bryce Dallas Howard). The two would energize the big screen in their scenes together.
When asked about kissing Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard remarked that it was good. She reported he was “perfect in every way” and she even joked he tasted like “Starburst!” Maybe that could explain why their kisses were so unexplainably juicy.
The 2007 motion picture ‘Atonement’ followed the tragic story of love and loss between Robbie and Cecilia. The two leading roles were filled by British actress Keira Knightley and Scottish actor James McAvoy. The two were cast perfectly.
McAvoy and Knightley lit the screen up and gave substance to every scene they were in. Later, when asked about their delightful chemistry in ‘Atonement,’ Knightley admitted McAvoy was “the best kisser ever.” This is most definitely conveyed in the movie.
In 2014 Anna Kendrick and Ryan Reynolds were in the film ‘The Voices.’ With its original, yet fairly disturbing plot, this black comedy/horror film was not super well-known. However the two stars, Reynolds and Kendrick, shared quite a kiss.
Later when asked about the kiss, Reynolds gave high praise and said it was “like taking your face to Awesometown.” Kendrick, always the comedienne, said the “Kendrick-train” does make stops in “Tolerableshire” and “Awkwardville!”
In the 2004 flick ‘Taking Lives,’ both Angelina Jolie and Ethan Hawke owned the screen with their powerful performances. Angelina, who played FBI Agent Illeana Scott, and Ethan, who played Martin Asher, had a rather cat-and-mouse type of relationship.
Later, when asked about working together in this movie, Ethan Hawke declared that Angelina was “born to whittle men and make them weak.” We’re guessing that poor Ethan was whittled down to a stick by Ms. Jolie!
In 2008 the vampiric film ‘Twilight’ took the world by storm. The movie, based on Stephanie Meyer’s best-selling book of the same name, starred Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson. The chemistry between the two attractive leads was insurmountable.
The rumor mill had it that Stewart and Pattinson were dating, yet she was seeing someone else. Stewart had been seeing Michael Angarano, but they ended their relationship. After that, it was Edward and Bella on screen and off!
“That’s Groovy, Baby”
In 2002’s ‘Austin Powers in Goldmember’ movie there was a very special sequence. Tom Cruise and Gwyneth Paltrow cameoed as Austin Powers and Dixie Normous, respectively, in this little treat.
This film-within-a-film opening segment was a take-off and comedic jab at Austin and all his antics. Later, when asked about Tom and doing the scene, Paltrow exclaimed “he was an amazing kisser!” She said that he was one of her favorite Hollywood kisses.
The Magic of the Written Word
In 2004’s ‘The Notebook,’ the romantic story spanned over decades. Both stars Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams were amazing in their roles as Noah and Allie. Though the two didn’t always relate well during filming, they dated afterward.
They both owned the silver screen and their kisses were epic. The chemistry between the two was unmistakable. Rachel and Ryan stayed together a couple years, then eventually parted ways. We will always think of them as Noah and Allie from this Nick Cassavetes film.
The Greatest Kiss
In ‘The Greatest Showman’ both Zendaya and Zac Efron were featured as Phillip and Anne. Zendaya played trapeze artist Anne and Zac was cast as Phillip, a playwright who became Barnum’s partner. Phillip met Anne and was instantly mesmerized by her beauty and talent.
One of the most romantic moments in the film was when Philip and Anne kiss. Later, Zac said their shared intimate kiss “might be my favorite kiss, I think ever.” We’re definitely impressed!
Need we say more? The 2003 film ‘Gigli’ did not receive the best ratings at the box office. It was a romcom and heist film, which starred Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez. Affleck (Gigli) and Lopez (Ricky) were dating during the film production.
Their chemistry was quite obvious, and showed throughout the film. They went on to make ‘Jersey Girl’ together and then went their separate ways. They both married other people, but, in 2021, they reunited and are still going strong!
Ewan McGregor and costar Mary Elizabeth Winstead were in the TV black comedy series ‘Fargo’ in season three. Apparently they had great chemistry - on and off screen. Though the two were a strangely matched couple on ‘Fargo,’ they were highly attracted to one another.
McGregor ended his long marriage to Eve Mavrakis and Winstead divorced Riley Stearns. The two ‘Fargo’ stars officially became an item, had a son, and got married in April 2022.
Ferrell - Friel
Will Ferrell and Anna Friel acted together in ‘Land of the Lost.’ The 2009 comedy adventure was not the biggest hit at the box office and even earned a few Golden Raspberry nominations.
The kiss, however, between Friel and Ferrell was quite amazing, according to Friel. She raved about his “twinkly blue eyes” and said he was gentle and a “really fantastic kisser,” then adding “you wouldn’t expect it from him, but he’s really really good.” Go Will!
In 1999 you didn’t see as many same gender kisses in movies. The iconic movie ‘Cruel Intentions’ had just that. The kiss between Cecile and Kathryn served as an important moment. It also won the MTV Best Kiss Award.
The updated take on the ‘Dangerous Liaisons’ story had Sarah Michelle Gellar (Kathryn) raving about her lip locking with Selma Blair (Cecile). “That’s easy!” Michelle answered when asked about her favorite onscreen kiss. Just don’t tell her hubby Freddie!
‘The Four Feathers’ was a war period piece. It’s set against the backdrop of the Mahdist war. The movie starred Kate Hudson and the late Heath Ledger. The two definitely ranked high with their onscreen chemistry and ignited every scene they were in together.
When asked later about the kiss, Kate raved about Heath. “He was so beautiful and gentle and sweet,” she stated. She said he was her favorite celebrity kiss and then shared “he was pretty excellent.”
That Transforming Kiss
There was nothing quite like the kiss had by co-stars Megan Fox and Shia LaBeouf. In the two ‘Transformers’ movies, both Sam (LaBeouf) and Mikaela (Fox) shared lots of battle scenes and a few intimate ones.
Their offscreen chemistry showed through while they had their scenes together. We have heard rumors of the two dating off and on while taping. This likely occurred when Fox and her then-beau Brian Austin Green were on the outs. We hope.
Puckering Up for ‘Paparazzi’
When Swedish actor Alexander Skarsgard was asked to play the boyfriend in Lady Gaga’s video for ‘Paparazzi,’ he had no idea who she was. He’s certainly glad he did since the video broke big and the two enjoyed an onscreen kiss.
When asked if he thought Lady Gaga was a good kisser, Skarsgard quickly replied with a brief “Yes.” Gaga, likewise, stated she thought the kiss was great and she would not hesitate to do it again.
New Girl’s Perspective
‘New Girl’ starring Zooey Deschanel and Jake Johnson, was on for seven seasons . It was billed as a romcom with some drama thrown in. It was about a female thirty-something year old teacher who lived with three male roommates.
Zooey (Jess) and roomie Johnson (Nick) hit it off and sparks started to fly on the second season. so, it was no surprise to see Jess and Nick kiss. Their chemistry was intense and both stars said they enjoyed kissing one another. Even the show producer had to keep an eye on them.
Good, Then Bad
Blake Lively and Penn Badgley were once a real life couple. During the first few seasons of TV series ‘Gossip Girl’ (which ran for six seasons from 2007 through 2012), Lively and Badgley were dating.
Playing Serena (Lively) and Dan (Badgley), the chemistry came naturally, since they were involved in real life. The kisses were definitely good. Later when the couple broke up, Badgley claimed the kisses were bad. Oops. We enjoyed watching Dan and Serena anyway.
‘That 70s Show’ ran for eight seasons from 1998 to 2006. It featured Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis among its regular cast. These two met while castmates on the show, and were somewhat friendly. Ashton was only 20, and Mila was five years his junior, so she was still very young at the time.
Over the years, the two went on to have other relationships. Ashton was married to Demi Moore, Mila dated Macaulay Culkin. After years apart, the couple got together in 2015. They are now married with two kids.
In supernatural drama ‘The Vampire Diaries,’ costars Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder were dating the first few seasons. The show ran from 2009 to 2017, so those earlier scenes when the two were together were pretty dreamy.
The dream unfortunately disappeared when Dobrev and Somerhalder broke up. Playing Elena and Damon became a challenge and the characters had to work harder to be convincing. Nina Dobrev left after season six, returning only for the series finale.
Dear friend is the literal translation of ‘Bel Ami,’ which was a European produced period film from 2012. It starred Robert Pattinson as Georges and Christina Ricci as Clotilde. Georges befriended many women in the film and Clotilde was among them. She was the one who truly cared for Georges.
Ricci (Clotilde) said that the kissing scenes she shared with Pattinson were great. Not only did she say he was “super funny” and a “sweet guy,” she also added that he is a “really good kisser.”
This Is a Kiss
The show ‘This Is Us’ focused on many familial relationships, but the one that was most important (and started it all) was of Rebecca and Jack. Played respectively by Mandy Moore and Milo Ventimiglia, their constant chemistry shone through in every storyline they shared.
Both actors were so convincing as a couple, they set the mood of the show. The onscreen husband and wife pair felt very comfortable with one another, as viewers could see. Moore sang Ventimiglia’s praises, and Ventimiglia replied “Right back at you!”
Pirating a Kiss
We’ve heard from Keira Knightley that James McAvoy was her favorite kissing partner, but she also did sing the praises of Johnny Depp. You may remember Knightley and Depp starred in the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ franchise together.
Knightley said kissing the dreadlocked Depp was “fantastic” but Depp said it was “awkward” to kiss someone so much younger. However, we know the women he has married have all been younger. This includes Amber Heard, who is actually a year younger than Keira.
Mystique and the Beast
Jennifer Lawrence and Nicholas Hoult had quite a long relationship of ups and downs and on-again off-again times. They went out from 2009 to 2014.
During the X-Men filming days, these two would spend much time together. You could see their unmistakable chemistry when it came to life in ‘X-Men: First Class.’ Nicolas and Jennifer’s busy taping schedules were not conducive for the long term, sadly. They’re both with other partners now.
In 1997 sci-fi thriller ‘Gattaca’ came out. Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman met on the set and chemistry ensued, so much so that these stars got married and ended up having two kids together. Maya Hawke, their daughter, stars in ‘Stranger Things.’
Unfortunately, both Uma and Ethan parted ways, but remained cordial for their kids. We’ll never forget their shared scenes and the attraction they had for one another in this somewhat dark and dystopian flick.
Wishing on a Werewolf
Though Team Edward (Robert Pattinson) fans were delighted he won Bella’s heart in the ‘Twilight’ series, Team Jacob fans were likely disappointed. Taylor Lautner played Jacob. Bella sure had a tough decision between a vampire and a werewolf. It happens.
Lautner said he enjoyed kissing Kristen Stewart and the scenes between Jacob and Bella will always be remembered fondly. He later called Stewart a “great kisser.” Jacob - we will find a werewolf significant other for you.
If you’re a fan of ‘One Tree Hill,’ you would know two of its co-stars had a lightning fast marriage. Sophia Bush (Brooke) and Chad Michael Murray (Lucas) met on the set and had a whirlwind romance, and got married in 2005.
The marriage didn’t last, unsurprisingly. Bush filed for an annulment but it wasn’t granted. She was able to get divorced a few months later. Murray and Bush still worked together for several seasons until he left the show in 2008.
Beyond the Film
‘The Place Beyond the Pines’ was a taut drama starring Eva Mendes and Ryan Gosling. The movie was released in 2012. Eva starred as Romina while Ryan played Luke. This ambitious film had some high drama moments as well as tender ones between Romina and Luke.
Ryan and Eva met shortly before starring in the movie together and have been right by each other's side ever since. They credit their teamwork and laid back, practical nature to keeping their relationship strong and happy.
The Butler Did It!
‘The Butler’ took 2013 by storm! The Lee Daniels-directed film received much praise from critics and viewers alike. Stars Oprah Winfrey and Forest Whitaker gave commanding performances as Cecil and Gloria.
Their chemistry on-screen was nothing short of amazing; offscreen the two had much respect for one another. The story of Cecil spans years and Whitaker, along with Winfrey did a great job encapsulating that. Later, Winfrey thanked Whitaker’s wife Keisha, for helping him become such a great kisser.
Bridget’s Diary Dilemma
‘Bridget Jones’s Diary’ (and its sequels) took the world by storm. The touching and often very humorous set of romcom films were spot on with many observations about life and relationships!
Bridget (Renee Zellweger) found herself torn between two men, Daniel (Hugh Grant) or Mark (Colin Firth). When asked about kissing scenes with each, the ever-diplomatic Zellweger replied “It’s not a bad day at work with either one, is it?” Hugh Grant was more direct in stating that she is a “top snogger.” That’s British slang for champion kisser, we think?
Legend of Love
In ‘The Legend of Tarzan,’ the two attractive stars had some pretty intense scenes. Margot Robbie (who played Jane) and Alexander Skarsgard (who played John/Tarzan) engaged in plenty of kissing.
Both Robbie and Skarsgard sang high praises of each other with Robbie coyly saying “It was a tough job but someone had to do it,” when asked about her intimate scenes with Skarsgard. We do wonder if a relationship happened, as they were seen away from the set - hanging out.
Here We Go Again
Sophie and Sky, played by Amanda Seyfried and Dominic Cooper, were seeing each other in ‘Mamma Mia!’ Seyfried and Cooper started dating in real life. However, they eventually broke up and Amanda went on to marry ‘Life in Pieces’ actor Thomas Sadoski.
The original ‘Mamma Mia!’ was released in 2008, then the sequel ‘Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again’ hit the silver screen in 2018. Seyfried and Cooper were once again paired as husband and wife, much to Sadoski’s chagrin.
Zanessa or Vac?
We usually hear the name Zanessa when we think of stars Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens. The two met each other while filming ‘High School Musical’ in 2006.
Cast as talented musical students Troy and Gabriella, the attraction was off the charts! Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens became a real life couple, dating for about five years after ‘High School Musical’ hit the airwaves. They parted ways in 2011, but Hudgens raved about Efron, saying “he’s a really good kisser.”
A Clear Ten
2008’s British comedy “How to Lose Friends & Alienate People’ is lightly based on Toby Young’s memoir of the same name. Simon Pegg played Sidney Young, and Kirsten Dunst played Alison.
Both Sidney and Alison were in a few scenes with the two ultimately becoming involved later on in the story. When asked about kissing Dunst, Pegg declared she had “the best lips ever” and even rated her a clear ten! What does her beau Jesse Plemmons say?
